The Royal Society of Biology offers its deepest sympathies to the Royal family following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022 at Balmoral.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the news, saying she died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

In a statement, chief executive of the RSB Dr Mark Downs CSci CBiol FRSB said: “We offer our deepest condolences to the Royal Family following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"Being awarded the Royal Title in 2015 has been a significant advance for the Society, and we are forever grateful to the Queen for her many years of service.”

Forty years ago, the Society's predecessor organisation, the Institute of Biology, was granted a Royal Charter to represent the UK's biologists, which now hangs in the RSB’s new offices in central London. The Society formed in 2009 and was awarded a Royal Title in 2015.

Professor Sir Ian Boyd FRS FRSB, president of the RSB said, “When her Majesty generously bestowed the Royal title on our noble society she was not only recognizing the RSB but the importance of biology and biologists across the whole of society.

"On behalf of our whole membership I would like to offer our condolences. She will be greatly missed."

The RSB remains grateful for the Queen’s many years of service.
